The right gym clothes are the ones you forget you are wearing. Here is what to wear for lifting, cardio and training classes, from tanks and tees to shorts and leggings, plus the fabric mistakes that make a session worse.

The short answer: wear clothes that move with you, let sweat escape and stay put. For most gym sessions that means a breathable tank or tee, shorts with a secure waistband or squat-proof leggings, and flat, stable shoes. Add a layer you can take off once you are warm. Everything else is personal style.
Start with the workout, not the outfit
What you wear should match what you are doing:
- Lifting: freedom at the shoulders and hips, nothing loose enough to catch on a bar, flat shoes.
- Cardio and conditioning: maximum breathability, light fabrics, a waistband that does not slip when you jump.
- Classes and mobility: stretch, coverage when you bend, and nothing that rides up.
Tops: tank, tee or crop
Tanks for lifting
A muscle tank with a cut-off sleeve and a relaxed armhole gives your shoulders full range for presses, pull-ups and overhead work. The LIT Barbell Tank is 200 gsm cotton jersey, lint-free, with knitted size tags instead of an itchy label, and a heavyweight feel that keeps its shape set after set.
Tees for everything
For cardio or hot sessions, a lighter tee breathes better. Our LIT Discipline Tee is 150 gsm pre-shrunk cotton, light enough to train in and good enough to wear after. Save the 260 gsm heavyweight tees for the walk in and out.
Crop tees and tanks
A fitted crop works well over high-waist leggings, because nothing bunches at the waistband. The LIT Fitted Crop Tee is a stretch-jersey raglan, and the LIT Ribbed Crop Tank is a scoop-neck rib knit.
Bottoms: shorts or leggings
Mesh shorts for cardio and conditioning
The Athletic Mesh Dolphin Shorts are double-layer honeycomb mesh with a 4-inch inseam, a 2-inch elastic waistband, a wax-tip drawstring and two side pockets for your phone and keys. They are unisex and true to size, and come in five colourways.
Cotton track shorts for lifting days
The LIT Track Short is 250 gsm cotton jersey with a throwback cut. Soft, comfortable and fine for squats and deadlifts.
Leggings for coverage and classes
For squats, lunges and anything where you bend over, leggings need to be squat-proof. The LIT High-Waist Leggings use a smooth, matte, squat-proof stretch fabric with a tall contoured waistband that stays put through a set. We wrote a whole guide on how to test leggings before you trust them.
Shoes, socks and the small stuff
- Lifting: flat, firm soles. Thick running cushions make squats and deadlifts wobbly.
- Running and classes: cushioned trainers made for the movement.
- Socks: mid-calf protects your shins on deadlifts.
- Bag: a sling or crossbody bag keeps phone, keys and card on you between stations.
- Layer: a hoodie for the warm-up and cool-down. Cold muscles feel stiff; a warm body moves better.
Gym clothes mistakes to avoid
- Clothes that need adjusting. If you are pulling at it between sets, it is the wrong piece.
- Waistbands that roll. Look for a wide band or a drawcord.
- Thin leggings. Always do the squat test in good light.
- Heavy fabric for hard cardio. Save the heavyweight cotton for before and after.
- Washing on hot. It breaks down stretch fabrics and shrinks cotton. Wash cold, inside out, and skip fabric softener on performance pieces.
Five gym outfits that just work
- Heavy lift day: Barbell Tank, Track Shorts, flat shoes.
- Conditioning: Discipline Tee, Mesh Dolphin Shorts, trainers.
- Leg day: Fitted Crop Tee, High-Waist Leggings.
- Early morning: any of the above, with a heavyweight hoodie over the top until you are warm.
- Gym to everywhere: train in a tank, pull on a matching sweat set to go home.
And when you know what to wear but not what to do, LIT Crew has programs written by our owner and trainer, Kory, with a form video for every movement.

Common questions
Still wondering? Answered from the piece itself.
What should a beginner wear to the gym?
A breathable tee or tank, shorts with a secure waistband or squat-proof leggings, and flat, stable trainers. Bring a hoodie for warming up. Comfort and freedom of movement matter more than anything else.
Is cotton OK for working out?
Yes for lifting and moderate sessions, especially a lighter cotton like a 150 gsm tee. For very sweaty cardio, lighter or mesh fabrics breathe and dry faster. Heavyweight cotton is best kept for warm-ups and wearing after.
What shorts are best for the gym?
For cardio and conditioning, light mesh shorts with an elastic waistband and zippered pockets. For lifting, cotton track shorts are comfortable and give full range of movement. The LIT Mesh Dolphin Shorts have a 4-inch inseam and two side pockets.
Should I wear a tank top or a T-shirt to lift weights?
Either works. A tank with a relaxed armhole gives the most freedom for overhead work and lets you see your shoulders move. A tee gives a little more coverage. Choose whichever you do not have to adjust between sets.
What shoes should I wear for lifting?
Flat, firm-soled shoes. Thick, soft running cushions compress under load and make squats and deadlifts less stable.
