An oversized hoodie looks intentional when three things line up: where the shoulder seam sits, how much the hem stacks, and what goes on your legs. Here is the whole system, with outfits for the gym, the street and the weekend.

The short answer: an oversized hoodie looks deliberate when the shoulder seam drops a few centimetres past your natural shoulder, the body ends around the top of your thigh, and whatever you wear below it is either slim enough to balance the volume or wide enough to match it on purpose. Get those three right and the hoodie reads as a choice, not a hand-me-down.
Oversized is not the same as too big. A hoodie cut oversized has its extra room designed in: a dropped shoulder, a wider body, sleeves long enough to cover the dropped seam. A regular hoodie two sizes up just has longer everything, including sleeves that swallow your hands and a hem that sits halfway to your knees. That is the difference people notice even when they cannot name it.
Step 1: Get the size right before you style anything
Most of our hoodies are cut oversized already, so the rule on the product pages is simple: take your usual size for the oversized fit shown, or size down one for a closer fit. Sizing up on a hoodie that is already cut big is how you end up looking like you borrowed it.
Three checks in the mirror:
- Shoulder seam: a little past your shoulder, sitting on the top of your arm. If it is at your elbow, go down a size.
- Hem: around the top of the thigh. Below mid-thigh starts to look like a dress on most people.
- Cuffs: a slight stack at the wrist is fine and looks relaxed. Fabric covering your knuckles is too long.
Step 2: Balance the volume below the waist
There are two ways to wear a big top, and both work.
Contrast: a roomy hoodie over something slimmer, like leggings, bike shorts or tapered joggers. The eye reads the hoodie as the statement and the slim leg as the frame. This is the easiest look to get right and the most flattering on almost everyone.
Match: a roomy hoodie over equally roomy trousers, like wide-leg sweats or relaxed cargos. This is the streetwear silhouette, and the trick is committing to it. Keep the colours close (tonal olive on olive, chocolate on black) so the outfit reads as one shape rather than two baggy pieces fighting.
The only combination that rarely works is an oversized hoodie over trousers that are neither slim nor wide, because nothing about the proportion looks intentional.
Step 3: Pick a colour that does some of the work
A heavy hoodie in a strong colour carries an outfit on its own. Our hoodies come in seven: fuchsia, red, azure, olive, black, chocolate and rust. A quick guide:
- Black and olive go with everything you already own. Start here if you buy one.
- Chocolate and rust are warm neutrals. They look best with black, cream or denim, and they photograph beautifully in autumn light.
- Red, fuchsia and azure are statement colours. Wear them with black or with their matching sweats and let the colour be the outfit.
Five oversized hoodie outfits that work
1. The gym-to-coffee run
Oversized hoodie, high-waist leggings or training shorts, clean trainers. The hoodie goes on after the session and covers you from the car park to the coffee shop. The LIT Logo Hoodie was made for exactly this, at 450 gsm it is warm enough to cool down in.
2. The tonal sweatsuit
Hoodie and sweats in the same colour. It is the most comfortable outfit in your wardrobe and, done in one colour, it looks considered rather than lazy. See our guide to wearing a matching sweat set for the details.
3. The street layer
Black hoodie, wide cargos or relaxed jeans, chunky trainers, a beanie. Add a crossbody bag worn across the chest and you have the whole streetwear uniform.
4. The cropped version
A cropped hoodie over high-rise wide-leg sweats or leggings. The shorter body shows the waistband and lengthens your legs. Our Cropped Mountain Hoodie has a drawstring hem you cinch wherever it sits best.
5. The layered autumn look
Hoodie under an open jacket, hood out over the collar. A heavyweight hoodie has enough structure that the hood sits up rather than collapsing under the jacket.
What makes an oversized hoodie hold its shape
Weight is most of it. A thin hoodie cut big just droops, while a heavy one drapes. Ours run at 450 gsm in either cotton French terry or a cotton-rich fleece, with ribbed cuffs and hems that pull the volume back in at the edges. A lined hood stands up instead of folding flat against your back. If you want the science, we wrote a whole piece on what GSM means and why heavyweight matters.
The bottom line
Size for the cut, not for the look you hope to get by sizing up. Balance the volume below the waist with something slim or something equally wide. Let the colour do some of the work. Then put it on and get on with your day, which is the whole point of a hoodie.

Common questions
Still wondering? Answered from the piece itself.
Should I size up for an oversized hoodie?
Not if the hoodie is already cut oversized. LIT hoodies are, so take your usual size for the relaxed fit shown, or size down one if you want it closer. Sizing up on an oversized cut makes the sleeves and hem too long.
What do you wear with an oversized hoodie?
Either something slim, like leggings, bike shorts or tapered joggers, or something deliberately wide, like wide-leg sweats or relaxed cargos. Both work; trousers that are neither slim nor wide are the combination that usually looks off.
How long should an oversized hoodie be?
Around the top of your thigh. Much longer than mid-thigh and it starts to read as a dress or a size too big rather than an oversized fit.
Can you wear an oversized hoodie to the gym?
Yes, especially for warming up and cooling down. A heavyweight hoodie keeps your muscles warm between sets and covers you on the way home. Take it off for the main lifts so it does not get in the way.
What colours does the LIT hoodie range come in?
Seven: fuchsia, red, azure, olive, black, chocolate and rust, across full-length and cropped cuts. Several have matching sweats for a full set.
